· Volcanologists are eager to establish eruptive patterns. While this eagerness can lead to establishment of false patterns, the benefits of establishing these patterns far outweigh the potential risks. Correct identification of a pattern is invaluable to eruption forecasting, making it far more accurate. This goal is one of the cornerstones of volcanology as a science and saves both human lives and property. Given the consequences of poor forecasting, the idea of volcanic time series patterns as a means to improve predictions cannot be ignored.
